From the Preface: ``The function of our e-book is to supply an total view of the entire easy gains of virtually periodic features, within the numerous meanings this time period has bought in sleek learn in addition to the various purposes of such services. this selection of the ebook should still, after all, make it valuable to these readers who're drawn to the connections that exist among thought (pure!) of just about periodic capabilities and such components of program because the thought of normal differential equations and partial differential equations. a number of different parts of software also are indicated, including an abundance of references. The Bibliographical Notes on the finish of virtually each bankruptcy were further to during this moment variation. thoroughly new is [Chapter II.3], that is dedicated to a comparatively new type of virtually periodic services: random capabilities nearly periodic in chance. it truly is yes that those features will locate many functions within the idea of stochastic sensible equations.''

My aim in generating the account of these constructions was to compare them with how teachers themselves perceive their own professional practices, the point being to discover whether the comparison provided evidence that the discourse implicated in the construction of the colleges in their promotional brochures was also implicated in teachers’ accounts of their practices. This interest in investigating the predictive value of the analysis of the promotional brochures was prompted by Fairclough’s (1992, p.
43). It is this notion of interdiscursivity which he uses to explain how orders of discourse can be ‘colonized’ by other orders of discourse, a process which is central to his account of social change. In this process, types of discourse that advance the interests of dominant groups in society permeate those associated with less powerful groups, positioning their members in ways which advantage the dominant groups. This form of social control is particularly effective because the constructions it advances through discursive practices are usually unnoticed, being naturalized or coming to be viewed as common sense, and are therefore hard to resist.
The issue involves a tension between what Linell (2001, p. 21) has called a ‘structure-in-focus view’, which he has identified with attempts to explain language as ‘one system’, and a ‘dynamics-in-focus view’, which emphasizes language as part of a ‘dynamic, only partially shared and fragmentarily known, dialogically constituted world’. The point is that, notwithstanding its instrumental orientation, SFL illustrates the ‘structure-in-focus view’ in under-theorizing these dynamic relations between the local and broader context and the linguistic system.
